Technical Examples
  1. The present invention features an electronic component system. The electronic component system can be a computer system. The system includes a wireless communication system. The wireless communication system enables information to be communicated wirelessly between separate components of the system. The wireless communication system includes a dongle. The dongle has an antenna for transmitting and/or receiving information and an electrical connector for mating engagement with an electrical connector on at least one of the separate devices. The wireless communication system can utilize bluetooth wireless communication technology.
  2. A user selects a wireless network mapping option on their computer and is presented with a list of names of electronic devices coupled to the wireless network to which the computer is coupled. When one of the electronic devices transmits a wireless identification signal to the computer, a visual cue identifies the default name associated with the electronic device in the list. The user may then rename the default name to a local name. The user may also opt to transmit a wireless identification signal of their own to one or more of the electronic devices coupled to the wireless network. Alternatively, the user may select one or more electronic devices from the list, and nudge the selected devices by sending an activation signal, causing the electronic devices to identify themselves using an audio or visual cue.
  3. Several related methods and apparatus for re-establishing communication for a wireless communication device after a communication loss between the wireless device and a wireless communication network are disclosed. In one illustrative example, the wireless network broadcasts identifiers of wireless devices associated with communication losses in the wireless network over a control channel. After regaining signal coverage, a wireless device monitors the control channel to decode and compare each broadcasted identifier with an identifier of the wireless device. Based on a match between a broadcasted identifier and the identifier of the wireless device, the wireless device transmits a control message which informs the wireless network of the presence of the wireless device. Otherwise, the wireless device normally refrains from transmitting the control message to the wireless network. Advantageously, communication with the wireless network is re-established (if at all necessary) without overburdening the wireless link with unnecessary traffic.
  4. A robust wireless communications system operable to provide communications for mobile wireless devices. The wireless communications system generally includes a management computing system, wireless infrastructure, and mobile wireless devices. The wireless infrastructure includes wireless infrastructure devices having processing and storage capability. Similarly, the mobile wireless devices include processing and storage capability. Communication links between the management computing system and wireless infrastructure, and wireless infrastructure and mobile wireless devices are utilized to downlink and uplink data. In operation, data generated at the management computing system may be downloaded to the wireless infrastructure and mobile wireless devices sequentially without active simultaneous communication links. Similarly, data generated at the mobile wireless devices may be uploaded to the wireless infrastructure and management computing system without active simultaneous communication links. Because the wireless infrastructure and mobile wireless devices are intelligent, decisions may be made independent of a communication link existing with the management computing system.
  5. In the wireless communication system, a wireless selection device is able to select any of a plurality of sufficiently proximate wireless devices without the necessity to actually physically contact or operate any of those devices. Thus, a user may control any of a plurality of devices from a single wireless selection device. The wireless selection device may in some embodiments be a wireless pointing device or a wireless keyboard to mention two examples.
