Technical Examples
- During the production of cigarettes, but in particular in the region of a cigarette-packaging machine, a comparatively large amount of tobacco accumulates as waste. This is specifically removed by arranging suction-extraction elements and/or conveying-away elements for tobacco particles (19) in the region of elements and subassemblies of the machines with increased accumulation of tobacco. The air with tobacco particles (19) which has been extracted by suction is led through a tobacco separator (45), which has a separating element (48) for receiving the tobacco particles. From time to time, these are removed from the tobacco separator (45) and recycled into the production process.
- An electrically heated cigarette smoking system includes a cigarette that is formed with a tobacco rod portion, a filter tube portion, a tobacco mat layer wrapped around the tobacco rod portion and the filter tube portion with opposite ends of the tobacco mat layer abutting along a seam parallel to the central axis of the cigarette and cigarette paper wrapped around the tobacco mat layer and bonded to itself along an overlapped seam that is offset from the seam of the tobacco mat layer. The method of manufacturing the cigarette includes wrapping the tobacco mat layer and the cigarette paper around the tobacco rod portion and the filter tube portion on a single, high-speed machine.
- A smoking article includes a tobacco rod in axial alignment with a filter section with a catalyst bed disposed between the tobacco rod and the filter section. The catalyst bed may be heated from an external portable heating source or may be heated by the internal evolving gases of combustion of the tobacco.
- In a method of detecting and eliminating foreign bodies in tobacco, a flow of tobacco advances first through a preparation zone where it is gathered into a continuous ribbon of tobacco filler, then through a forming station at which the filler is used to fashion a continuous cigarette rod, and finally through a cutter device that divides the rod into cigarette sticks; the advancing flow is directed at a given point through a detection device and exposed to electromagnetic radiation of microwave frequency emitted and received in such a way as to generate output signals reflecting any variations in moisture content along the flow of tobacco, caused by the inclusion of foreign bodies and associated with given portions of the flow each coinciding with a singly identifiable cigarette stick.
- Apparatus for ascertaining the mass and/or the moisture content of successive increments of a running rod containing tobacco and/or filter material for tobacco smoke has a resonator housing with a cylindrical internal chamber which is disposed between an inlet and an outlet and wherein the rod is exposed to microwaves. The housing is made of a metallic material having a low thermal expansion coefficient, and its internal surface is lined with gold or another corrosion resistant substance. A protective plastic tube establishes a path for the rod from the inlet, across the chamber and into the outlet of the resonator housing.
