  1. A new key telephone system including a new key telephone and new telephone interface which use a new data transmission scheme has been developed, unlike an old key telephone system including an old telephone and old telephone interface unit which use an old data transmission scheme. The new telephone interface unit and new key telephone are compatible with both the new and old data transmission schemes. Even if, therefore, the new telephone interface unit is connected to the old key telephone, or the old telephone interface unit is connected to the new key telephone, data transmission can be performed by using the old data transmission scheme, thus maintaining compatibility.
  2. A system is disclosed for integrating electronic mail, voice mail, and fax mail in a universal mailbox. Message receivers may access their messages with a telephone or a computer regardless of the communication medium used by the message sender. Using a telephone, message receivers may playback voice mail, redirect fax mail, and "listen" to e-mail through a text-to-speech conversion process. Using a computer and modem, message receivers may playback voice mail, view fax mail, and read e-mail by accessing the universal mailbox via connection software. Message senders and receivers may choose from a variety of filter and forward options that allow them to manage their communications via the universal mailbox. Forwarding and conversion of messages is performed automatically. The options are used to define a set of rules to be applied to inbound and outbound messages so that messages are sent and received in accordance with the preferences of the senders and receivers.
  3. A cellphone system comprises a GPS reference station located with a telephone cell site. Such GPS reference station tracks the GPS satellites visible to its local area and estimates the Doppler for each such GPS satellite. The system also includes mobile GPS receivers and cellphones that move around and through the operational area of the cell site. It is assumed that the satellite Dopplers seen by the GPS reference station will have insubstantial differences with the true Dopplers observed by other GPS receivers operating within the cell site's service area. The Doppler estimates are thus routinely communicated over a wireless telephone channel to the mobile GPS receivers and cellphones that register locally. Such mobile GPS receivers then can confidently adopt the surrogate Doppler estimates as a center starting point for their initialization frequency searches. The time required for such mobile GPS receivers and cellphones to initialize and provide a first fix is thereby substantially reduced.
  4. A portable telephone which enables operations other than transmission and reception functions, such as retrieving telephone numbers, creating e-mails, playing games, without emitting strong electromagnetic waves even in areas where communication by a portable telephone is prohibited, thereby preventing occurrence of misunderstanding by or disturbance to a third person. The multifunctional portable telephone is composed of a telephone function control unit (102) for controlling telephone functions as a whole, a non-telephone function control unit (103) for controlling non-telephone functions, a system control unit (104) for controlling the entire device, an input unit (105) comprising a mode key (15), telephone function operation changeover keys (16) and (17), dial keys (18), and the like, a display unit (106), and an external notification unit (107) for externally informing the operational state of telephone functions, wherein the system control unit (104), while a function other than a function utilizing radio wave transmission or transmission and reception is being performed, stops the telephone function control unit (102) from performing radio wave transmission or transmission and reception as well as enables the external notification unit (107) to inform that radio wave transmission or transmission and reception is in a stop state.
  5. The communication system utilizes transmitters that provide communication transmissions having deterministic data. Receivers of the system have the digital processing capability for correlating received transmission reflections of the deterministic data amongst the receivers, the reflections of the deterministic data being from objects within the transmission range of a respective transmitter. The correlating includes utilizing relatively weak multipath signals of the transmission reflections and the superimposition of external data therewith to provide a resulting data base of range reflections. The range reflections are provided to others of said plurality of receivers for processing to derive the environment and the locations and movements of objects without the use of a specific interrogation signal, thereby providing situational awareness.
