  1. A stylus for an electrographic position location apparatus is disclosed. In one embodiment, the stylus includes a writing element that is retractable. The stylus may have a proximal end and a distal end. A conductive annular structure may be at the proximal end of the stylus.
  2. A system, method and software for managing power, operating states and transition within a stylus based information handling system (IHS) are provided. In one aspect, a parking garage operable to detect the presence of an IHS stylus is provided. When the stylus is detected in the parking garage, an IHS digitizer operable to receive stylus input may be operated in a reduced power state. The stylus may include a switch operable in association with the parking garage which enables a stylus power supply to be disengaged when the stylus is parked in the stylus garage. In response to one or more transition events, such as a power down or migration to a reduced IHS operating state, one or more user notifications may be generated in response to a determination that the stylus has been misallocated or is not parked in the stylus garage.
  3. This invention includes a stylus that employs a translucent material for conducting light to convey information from a portable electronic device to a user. In one preferred embodiment, the stylus provides a thermometer style fuel gauge. Inserting the stylus into a special stylus holder actuates the fuel gauge. A thermometer like fuel gauge reading then appears in the body of the stylus. Other embodiments include changing color, focal point of a lens and light intensity to convey information. The stylus may be used to convey any type of information, including receipt of e-mail by the portable electronic device.
  4. The disclosure relates to systems and methods for housing a stylus as part of a handle of a mobile terminal to increase utility. By designing a cavity within the handle of a mobile terminal, a compartment is obtained which in turn can be exploited for housing a stylus therein. The inner walls of such cavity can include sculpted ribs that function as a mechanism for guiding the stylus during insertion into the cavity. In one aspect, the stylus placed within the handle can be substantially parallel thereto. In addition, the stylus can be engaged in the cavity of the handle via a spring locking mechanism or any other suitable securing assembly.
  5. Method and system for activating at least one of a display screen and a touch screen, and/or for deactivating a power conservation system for a hand held computing device (PDA, radiotelephone, etc.), when a stylus used for the touch screen is absent from a receptacle that receives the stylus on the device. When the stylus is present in the receptacle, the display screen and/or touch screen are deactivated and/or the power conservation system is activated. When the stylus is absent from the receptacle, but an accumulated time for such absence is greater than a selected time-out value, the system reacts as if the stylus is present in the receptacle. Examples of methods of sensing presence or absence of a stylus in a stylus receptacle are presented.
