- A book on demand system for manufacturing a set books. The system includes an order placement system and a book manufacturing system. The order placement system includes a computer and a database for storing books in an electronic form. A customer can operate the computer to access the database and to select a set of books to purchase. In addition, the customer can define the storage space will be used to store the set of books. The computer responds to this customer input by manufacturing the set of books so that the books can be placed physically within the storage space.
- For the purpose of delivering, in the lying-flat condition, book blocks or books which are fed in, standing on their back or on the front cut and at defined timing intervals along their height, from a preceding machine in a transport path, provision is made, according to the method, for the books to be picked up, in accordance with the timing, in the transport path, swung out transversely to the direction of infeed and transferred into a defined delivery position which is spaced apart from the transport path, and is essentially a lying-flat position and from which said books can be fed to subsequent machines synchronously with the timing. The device for performing the method includes a continuously driven clamping conveyer consisting of traction means conveyers which act counter to one another and clamp the books in between them and convey them as far as the picking-up position, a transporting band which still carries the books even in the picking-up position, at least one gripper which clamps the books in the picking-up position and, after the picking-up operation, swings them into the delivery position spaced apart from the transport path and deposits the said books at that point, and a belt conveyer which feeds the books out of said delivery position.
- The subject invention pertains to a method and apparatus utilizing one or more spiral coils, such as spiral birdcage coils, spiral saddle coils, Helmholtz coil pairs, and other spiral volume and spiral surface coils. The spiral coils of the subject array can be substantially isolated from each other while covering nearly the same volume or surface. For cylindrical geometrics, isolation can be enhanced by having the rotation, or change in direction from one end of the coil to the other, be 2n?, where n is an integer.
- An arc tube is formed by turning a glass tube at a substantially middle thereof and winding the glass tube from the middle to its both ends around an axis to form a double spiral, and sealing electrodes at both ends of the glass tube. The spiral pitch of a spiral part in a vicinity of one of the ends and an adjacent spiral part in the direction of the axis is set larger than the spiral pitch of other adjacent spiral parts, to widen a gap between the one end and the adjacent spiral part.
- A bookbinding machine for processing inner books includes a transport system with a multiplicity of inner-book clamps continually movable in a closed continuous track. Each of the inner book clamps is articulated to a circulating roller chain and has a rear-edge stop for aligning the inner books. The bookbinding machine includes workstations that perform positionally accurate operations on the inner books including the application of glue, the application of reinforcement or gauze sections, the application of jackets, binding with wire stitches, the introduction of utilisation features (e.g. punched holes, tear-off perforations, etc.) and the like. The transport system of the inner-book clamps and at least one workstation are driven independently of one another. A measuring system for positional detection of the inner-book clamps or of the inner books is provided in proximity to the independently driven workstation. The measuring system provides inner book or clamp position data used to control the workstation performing positionally accurate operation on the relevant inner book.
