- Methods are provided for forming a plurality of permanent magnets with two different north-south magnetic pole alignments for use in microelectromechanical (MEM) devices. These methods are based on initially magnetizing the permanent magnets all in the same direction, and then utilizing a combination of heating and a magnetic field to switch the polarity of a portion of the permanent magnets while not switching the remaining permanent magnets. The permanent magnets, in some instances, can all have the same rare-earth composition (e.g. NdFeB) or can be formed of two different rare-earth materials (e.g. NdFeB and SmCo). The methods can be used to form a plurality of permanent magnets side-by-side on or within a substrate with an alternating polarity, or to form a two-dimensional array of permanent magnets in which the polarity of every other row of the array is alternated.
- An objective-lens driving apparatus, includes an objective lens for converging light on a recording surface of an optical disk, a focusing coil having four edges for enclosing the objective lens, and two pairs of permanent magnets. The two pairs of permanent magnets are arranged so that polarities thereof are identical toward the focusing coil, with one pair of the permanent magnets arranged so as to be opposed to one edge of the focusing coil, and another pair of the permanent magnets arranged so as to be opposed to another edge of the focusing coil which is opposite to the one edge of focusing coil. An interval between two permanent magnets constituting the one pair of the permanent magnets is narrower than an interval between two permanent magnets constituting the another pair of the permanent magnets.
- A blood pump has an impeller rotatably disposed and magnetically suspended within a cavity of a stator by a plurality of magnetic bearings (passive permanent and active electromagnetic) having impeller magnets on the impeller and stator magnets or coils/poles on the stator. A motor includes impeller magnets on the impeller and coils/poles associated with the stator. A single, annular blood flow path extends axially through the cavity between the impeller and the stator, and between the impeller magnets on the impeller and the stator magnets or the coils/poles on the stator.
- A magnetic device for attracting and retaining a fastener which has a bit, a generally ring-shaped keeper having a bottom surface, at least some portion of which bottom surface is magnetized, at least one pair of magnets, each pair of magnets having two magnets with alternating poles, adjacent to the magnetic bottom surface of the keeper and arranged around the bit such that an even number of magnets with alternating poles is arranged around the bit, and a non-magnetic holder that secures the keeper and the magnets and surrounds the bit. The magnets provide magnetic flux to the keeper and the fastener. Each pair of adjacent magnets provides a closed magnetic flux path through a first magnet of the pair, the keeper, a second magnet of the pair, and the fastener. The location of the magnetic device along the bit may be adjustable or fixed.
- A tool 10 for suspending in a well retrieves various metal debris from the well, and includes an elongate tool body 12 within a plurality of circumferentially shaped slots 14. Each slot having a radially outward portion with a circumferential width less than a circumferential width of a radially inward portion. The plurality of magnets 16 are provided in each slot, and one or more stop rings 18 retain the plurality of magnets in the slots while allowing for removal of the magnets from the slots. Each of the plurality of magnets 16 may be substantially enclosed within a non-ferrous carrier 26 having an outer configuration for fitting within a respective of one of the plurality of slots. According to the method of invention, the magnets are postioned within the slots and are retained within the slots by the one or more stop rings, and the elongate tool body and the plurality of the magnets are suspended in a well.
