Technical Examples
  1. A board game for at least two individuals to play. The board game is a modified form of soccer that uses roofing nails pounded into a flat surface as "players," a marble as a soccer ball, and a pair of Popsicle sticks as shooters. In addition, an elastic band is wrapped around into a rectangular fashion to have a rectangular-shaped playing field.
  2. An automated goalkeeper assembly includes a track having a length; a goalie structure; and a base that supports the goalie structure on top of the track. The base has wheels and a motor cooperating with at least one of the wheels for moving the goalie structure along the length of the track. A player, for example, a hockey player or a soccer player, can practice scoring goals against the goalie structure. The goalie structure is preferably inflatable, and the track is preferably constructed from a plurality of track sections. The track preferably has grooves and the base preferably has flanges that cooperate with the grooves to keep the base secured in the track when the player bumps into the goalie structure. All of the components of the goalkeeper assembly can be provided as a kit that can be assembled and disassembled as desired.
  3. The inventive work load manager (WLM) dynamically responds to changes in workload characteristics. The WLM bases response on performance goals set by the administrator, and manipulates the resources to achieve these goals. The WLM receives performance information from performance monitors. The WLM examines the information from the performance monitors and compares the information with the goals using a Proportional Integral and Derivative controller. Based on the comparison, the WLM may increase, decrease, or leave unchanged, the resources devoted to an application. If the performance of an application is performance is lagging, e.g., if transactions are taking longer than the goal, then the WLM increases the entitlement. If an application is over-achieving, then the WLM will decrease its entitlement and allocate it to another application. The WLM uses an arbiter which allocates the resources between the different applications, based on the priorities of the applications. Consequently, the WLM creates a feedback loop between application performance and CPU entitlements.
  4. A method is provided for establishing a community of practice including a plurality of users, one or more experts, and one or more community of practice managers. A need for a community of practice is identified. The roles and responsibilities of participants in the community of practice are identified. One or more goals are identified for the community of practice based on the identified need. A plurality of the participants in the community of practice collaborate to achieve the identified goals.
  5. Frame-based streaming data flows through a graph of multiple interconnected processing modules. The modules have a set of performance parameters whose values specify the sensitivity of each module to the selection of certain resources of a system. A user specifies overall goals for an actual graph for processing a given type of data for a particular purpose. A flow manager constructs the graph as a sequence of module interconnections required for processing the data, in response to the parameter values of the individual modules in the graph in view of the goals for the overall graph as a whole, and divides it into pipes each having one or more modules and each assigned to a memory manager for handling data frames in the pipe.
