Technical Examples
  1. A multiprocessor data processing system includes a plurality of processors coupled to an interconnect and to a global promotion facility containing at least one promotion bit field. A first processor executes a high speed instruction sequence including a load-type instruction to acquire a promotion bit field within the global promotion facility exclusive of at least a second processor. The request may be made visible to all processors coupled to the interconnect. In response to execution of the load-type instruction, a register of the first processor receives a register bit field indicating whether or not the promotion bit field was acquired by execution of the load-type instruction. While the first processor holds the promotion bit field exclusive of the second processor, the second processor is permitted to initiate a request on the interconnect. Advantageously, promotion bit fields are handled separately from data, and the communication of promotion bit fields does not entail the movement of data cache lines.
  2. Embodiments of the invention relate to routing promotion content files to groups of end node devices having the same or similar device attributes, such as data storage capacity, called transmission groups. Specifically, a promotion is assembled into one or more data packages, with a package being created for each different transmission group. Promotions may be aggregated, with multiple promotions being placed in each package. The packages may include information such as promotion identification, start time, end time, duration, port number, multicast or broadcast address to facilitate bulk data routing via broadcast or multicast. The packages are then used to generate and deliver promotion schedules to each device of a transmission group and to schedule bulk data transmissions to the respective transmission groups via separate broadcast or multicast for each package.
  3. A first transceiver (200) sends (102) a predetermined number of blocks of data to a second transceiver, and records (104) on which of a plurality of sub-carriers each of the blocks of data is sent. The first transceiver receives (106) from the second transceiver a list of the blocks of data that were received with errors, and calculates (108) from the list a plurality of error rates corresponding to the plurality of sub-carriers. The first transceiver then determines (110) the SQE for each of the plurality of sub-carriers from the plurality of error rates, and adjusts (112) the data rate in accordance with the SQE determined for each of the plurality of sub-carriers. These processes can be implemented as a method that is facilitated by a software program.
  4. A method for making a dental appliance is disclosed, including affixing a first blank piece of material to a second blank piece of material forming a combined blank. The first blank piece of material is substantially softer than the second blank piece of material. The combined blank is then placed over a dental cast with the first blank piece of material faces the dental cast, and a dental appliance is formed by using a thermal form suck-down of the combined blank over the dental cast with the first blank piece of material in contact with the teeth of the dental cast. Finally, the dental appliance is removed from the dental cast. The dental appliance can be trimmed while it is on the dental cast or after it is removed. Methods for affixing a first blank piece of material to a second blank piece of material, include laminating the first blank piece of material to the second blank piece of material, bonding the first blank piece of material to the second blank piece of material, and sealing the first blank piece of material to the second blank piece of material. A dental appliance for placement on the teeth of a user is disclosed, including a first layer, created from the first piece of blank material, for direct contact with the teeth of the user, and a second layer, created from the second piece of blank material, affixed over the first layer. The first layer is substantially softer than the second layer.
  5. A method of extending promotional discounts and special prices on items for sale to identified consumers. After the identification of a consumer by a unique identifier; a selected item is promoted with a discount or special price to the identified consumer. The discount or special price is granted upon a purchase of the item by the identified consumer prior to the withdrawal or termination of the promotion to the identified consumer. The withdrawal or termination of the promotion is held in abeyance upon an acknowledgment of the promotion by the identified consumer. In other words, the identified consumer must take specific action to prevent a promotional discount from being withdrawn. This inverted promotion provides for greater incentives for the consumer to provide information about his or her purchasing habits.
