  1. A method and system for identifying telemarketer communications directed to a subscriber of a call screening service is provided. A link monitoring system monitors all inbound and outbound calls of a carrier network collecting data such as calling and called telephone directory numbers, and a termination status for at least each inbound call to a calling number. The data is analyzed at a telemarketer detection module to determine calling patterns of calling numbers. If a calling pattern of a calling telephone number matches a profile of telemarketer communications, the calling number is stored in a database of telephone directory numbers associated with telemarketer communications. A call is received from a calling party directed to a subscriber of the call screening service. Then a determination is made as to whether a telephone directory number of the calling party is known. If the telephone number of the calling party is known, a determination is made as to whether the telephone number of the calling party matches a telephone number stored in the database of telephone numbers associated with telemarketer communications. If a match exists, the call is intercepted from reaching the subscriber of the call screening service.
  2. System and method for recording at least one message to be associated with a prepaid telephone calling card. The system and method include and involve a data storage system for storing data corresponding to the prepaid telephone calling card and at least one message. Also included and involved is a prepaid telephone calling card processing system that is coupled to the data storage system and configured to receive a request to record the message(s) during a service setup call over a telephone network and to cause the message(s) to be recorded for subsequent playback. The prepaid telephone calling card processing system may also be configured to receive a request to play the message(s) stored in relation to the prepaid telephone calling card during an access call over the telephone network and to cause the message(s) to be played back automatically.
  3. A method for providing the names of the city and state of a calling party to a called party when the calling party's name is unavailable. The method utilizes the calling party's telephone number to determine the names of the city and state from which the calling party is calling. The method incorporates a database that contains combinations of telephone numbers and the names of the cities and states that correspond to the various combinations of numbers. In response to an indication that the name of the calling party is unavailable, the method accesses the databases and searches for the matching telephone number and corresponding city and state names. If the names are found, they are delivered to the calling party.
  4. According to one embodiment of the invention, a cellular telephone includes a memory and a transmitter. The memory is adapted to store a telephone number associated with an incoming telephone call, and the transmitter is adapted to transmit the telephone number to another telephone. The cellular telephone may also include a receiver and a calling unit. The receiver is adapted to receive a different telephone number from the another telephone, and the calling unit is adapted to place an outgoing telephone call to the different telephone number. In an alternative embodiment, a method of placing a telephone call from a telephone includes the steps of receiving, over a wireless link, call related information from another telephone, and placing an outgoing call based on the call related information. The other telephone may be a cellular telephone, and the call related information may include a telephone number associated with a telephone call previously received by the other telephone.
  5. A voice messaging system such as a telephone answering device which allows a calling party to bypass the ring signal and substantially immediately allow the calling party to leave a voice message. To activate the no ring signal access to the telephone answering device, the calling party preferably enters a control sequence prior to entering the telephone number of the called party to signal the appropriate central office to signal the telephone line of the called party that the ring signal is to be bypassed. The central office includes an appropriate ring signal bypass request detection module adapted to detect a request for no ring signal from a calling party. In the disclosed embodiment, the calling party signals the central office using an appropriate sequence of DTMF tones, e.g., '
