Technical Examples
  1. A multi-stage elevator car has equipment for fine positioning of the cars wherein the car thresholds are positionable at the level of the floor thresholds. Adjusting equipment operating on the principle of a differential block and pulley is provided for fine positioning of the cars, the equipment including an endless cable guided over deflecting rollers arranged at the main frame of the multi-stage car and over deflecting rollers arranged at the cars, wherein the cars execute vertical movements of opposite sense.
  2. A signaling safety system includes transmitter-receiver units for ground-train communication by radio in regular safety operation mode, using a base station and an antenna. The position of each train car is communicated from the cars to a ground train controller which detects the presence of a train on-rail. Based on the latter information, information is transmitted from the controller to each of the cars regarding corresponding speed limits. In addition to such radio transmitter-receivers, the signaling safety system also includes additional communication devices, such that, when each of the cars approaches a specific range, car information from each of the cars can be received by the controller, by communication between ground communication devices and an on-train communication device which are installed so as to communicate with each other. Concurrently with the regular safety operation, by the alternative safety system, the presence on-rail of each of the cars is controlled for each new block section. When ground-train communication by radio fails, the controller switches to operation by the alternative safety system so that safe operation of the train can be continued.
  3. A multilevel railway auto rack car for transporting automobiles is provided having at least one upper deck with end segments pivotable to accommodate the difference in height of corresponding upper decks of adjacent auto rack cars and facilitate loading of automobiles between cars. A pivoting assembly pivots the end segment between raised and lowered positions, as well as prevents the end segment from being inadvertently left in the lowered position.
  4. A material handling and transport apparatus for railroad use comprises a rail car loading assembly and a deck vehicle. The rail car loading assembly comprises a loading machine having a handling arm, and means to move the rail car loading assembly forward and rearward along top edges of sidewalls of a string of gondola cars and across gaps between the gondola cars. The deck vehicle comprises a deck located at a deck end of the deck vehicle such that the deck can be maneuvered adjacent to an end gondola car of the string of gondola cars wherein the deck is located at a vertical loading position such that the means to move the rail car loading assembly is operative to move the rail car loading assembly onto the deck.
  5. A system is used to transport wind turbines on railroad cars. The wind turbines are partially disassembled into four types of components-nacelles, blades, rotor hubs and tower sections. The blades are stored in cargo containers suitable for use in multi-mode transportation of freight by ship, rail and truck. The nacelles and rotor hubs are not stored in containers but are affixed to transport structures. Brackets are affixed to the tower sections. Then the components are mounted on railroad cars.
