- When a magnetic tape material is slit into a plurality of magnetic tapes, projections are formed in edge portions of side surfaces of the magnetic tapes. The projections are removed by pressing cutting tools against the edge portions of the side surfaces of the magnetic tape while transporting the magnetic tape. Thus, product quality of the magnetic tape is improved.
- The present invention provides servo band recorded magnetic tapes, manufacturing method of the tapes, servo band writers and servo band Writing method. The background magnetic flux transition zone is generated with one directional polarization of the magnetization along the servo bands on the magnetic recording tapes. The servo stripes are generated with the reverse polarity of magnetization in the background magnetic flux transition zone. Then the magnetic flux servo transition against the background has more contrast so that the detected servo signal which is differential signal can be maintained in a high level.
- A cartridge for a magnetic recording tape has a first pair of reels rotatably mounted therein which carry a first wide magnetic recording tape, and a second pair of reels disposed therein which carry a second wide magnetic recording tape. The reels are disposed in the cartridge so that each of the first and second wide magnetic recording tapes spans a central space, which is adapted to receive a magnetic recording head of a tape drive, when the cartridge is inserted in the tape drive. A corresponding tape has four drive motors with respective drive shafts, that respectively engage the four reels of the cartridge for transporting the first and second recording magnetic recording tapes across the central opening. The drive has a recording head and a recording head positioning assembly for selectively positioning the recording head at any location along the width of the first and second wide magnetic recording tapes.
- A recording/reproducing method and a recording/reproducing apparatus for magnetic tapes are provided as a recording/reproducing technique suitable for recording density enhancement of magnetic tapes. The method and apparatus are capable of correctly recording and reproducing data without causing errors even with occurrence of size changes in the widthwise direction of a magnetic tape. In the recording/reproducing method for magnetic tapes in which data tracks and servo tracks are provided, a tape width is detected and a value of the tape width is stored during data recording, and data reproduction is performed while tape tension is controlled so that the tape width during data reproduction is maintained equal to the tape width during data recording.
- A magnetic recording medium having a non-magnetic support and a magnetic layer formed thereon, wherein the magnetic layer comprises a ferromagnetic powder, a binder and a non-magnetic inorganic powder, and wherein at least 95% of the non-magnetic powder particles contained in the magnetic layer have a particle size of 0.05 to 0.013 ?m, provide that the non-magnetic powder particles are those found in a field of view of 1.8 ?m×2.4 ?m when the surface of the magnetic layer is observed with a scanning electron microscope at a magnification of 50,000 times.
