Technical Examples
- A method of performing a medical procedure, such as surgery, is provided. A nerve is stimulated in order to adjust the beating of the heart to a first condition, such as a stopped or slowed condition. The medical procedure is performed on the heart or another organ. The stimulation of the nerve is stopped in order to adjust the beating of the heart to a second condition, such as a beating condition. The heart itself may also be stimulated to a beating condition, such as by pacing. The stimulation of the nerve may be continued in order to allow the medical procedure to be continued. A sensor to sense a characteristic of a fluid or tissue, such as an impending contraction, may be also used during the medical procedure. Systems and devices for performing the medical procedure are also provided.
- Methods and apparatus are disclosed for treating body tissue whereby a section of tissue is drawn into contact with the open distal end of the first passageway of the apparatus. A tissue treatment fluid is introduced into the second passageway for treating the desired section of tissue retained within the first passageway. Methods and apparatus are also disclosed for positioning a medical device at a desired location within the heart. A portion of the apparatus is retained at a desired location of the heart and a medical device is extended through a passageway of the apparatus for contacting the heart at the desired location.

- A medical device chronically monitors cardiac function in a patient. An input circuit of the medical device receives a pressure signal representative of a pressure sensed within a ventricle of the patient's heart as a function of time. A processor derives from the pressure signal a myocardial performance index based upon pressures in the ventricle. The processor then provides an output based upon the myocardial performance index.
- A medical apparatus is provided. The medical apparatus is designed to be a foot covering that is specially designed for diabetic individuals who may have or be susceptible to medical conditions of the feet. The medical apparatus allows an individual to go outdoors without wearing shoes, because the medical apparatus itself serves as a crude shoe covering over a pair of feet. In addition, the medical apparatus itself can serve as a sock covering, which can then be used when a shoe is placed over an individual's feet.
