Technical Examples
- A therapeutic device, such as an exercise device, includes the principles of osteogenic repair by incorporating a vibrational loading mechanism into the exercise device. By doing so, the therapeutic device provides an increased osteogenic effect, thereby enhancing the benefits of the therapy. As an example, an exercise device includes a support surface for supporting all or part of the bodily tissue of an individual using the device. A linear or rotary vibrational loading mechanism associated with the frame or a rotational element of the exercise device drives the support surface at a selected load and frequency, thereby inducing mechanical loading of bodily tissue adjacent to the support surface sufficiently to facilitate the growth, development, strengthening, and/or healing of bone tissue. The vibrational loading mechanism may be incorporated into any exercise device, including standard exercise devices such as rowing machines, stair climbing machines, elliptical trainers, bicycles, cross-country ski trainers, treadmills, or weight trainers.
- A lockout mechanism allows for controlled use of exercise equipment. Use is allowed on a time-controlled basis. A predetermined period of time is allocated based on an amount of money paid. The preferred embodiments include a coin-operated, time-controlled, lockout mechanism incorporated onto various types of exercise equipment to prohibit use. The first category including those types of exercise equipment which utilize flywheels, including but not limited to: elliptical trainers, stationary bicycles, stair steppers and cross-country ski machines. This first embodiment employs a friction device to prohibit use. The second category including those types of exercise equipment which utilize adjustable resistance in the form of a weight stack, including but not limited to: universal gyms and nautilus equipment. This second embodiment employs a spring loaded latch mechanism to prohibit use. A third category includes those types of exercise equipment which require electricity to operate. This third embodiment employs a timer circuit to interrupt power to prohibit use.
- An isometric/pacing exercise device that is adaptable to exercise apparatuses to produce a signal to the user to exert an isometric muscular force against the force provided by the exercise apparatus. The signal can be either aural or visual. The isometric/pacing exercise device provides a convenient means for a user to isometrically exercise their muscles on existing exercise apparatuses which do not presently have such a signaling device. The device is adaptable to most exercise apparatuses.

- Systems and methods for providing two-way communication between an exercise device and a computer device. A computer device and an exercise device employ different protocol formats and communicate through a translator device, which includes a microcontroller specifically designed to translate data or signals deliverable by different communication protocols. The exercise device, the computer device, or a user at either the exercise or computer device may initiate the communication. The enabled communication allows for such features as the performance of an automatic diagnostic analysis on the exercise device, the programming of internal parameters of the exercise device upon identifying specific components, the monitoring of any measurable parameter of the user, the providing of instructional direction and/or encouragement relating to a particular exercise routine, the controlling of the amount of resistance experienced by the user of the exercise device, and other interactions facilitated by the translator device.
