  1. Disclosed herein are a magnetic memory device and method for storing and retrieving data. The magnetic memory device includes a read disk and a storage disk. The read disk comprises of an array of read heads wherein the individual read head corresponds to a storage element on the storage disk.
  2. The disclosure deals with the management of data in the memory of a digital media playback device. Specifically this invention deals with the mechanisms to allow memory to be treated as a uniform resource, regardless of the physical implementation of the data storage in the playback device. Manage the memory on a digital media player as logical partitions, not just physical partitions between different types of memory. This will treat the entire memory space as a uniform piece of memory, regardless of whether the memory is internal memory with battery backup, Flash memory that behaves like a logical disk, rotating media that is read/write (typically magnetic disk or CD-RW or DVD-RW) or rotating media that is read only.
  3. A disk drive capable of supporting speculative data transfers. Requested first data are read from the disk drive. Before the first data are read, a determination is made as to whether there are un-requested second data that are likely to be requested at a later time as part of a data stream. If so, then a determination is made as to whether the second data and the first data are stored in locations that are physically/logically proximate on the same disk. If the second data are close to the first data, then the second data are speculatively read and stored in a local disk cache. If a subsequent request comes to the disk drive for the second data, then the second data are quickly produced from the disk cache rather than being slowly read off the disk.
  4. A system allowing a target machine to be booted up from a disk image stored in memory. Instead of reading the boot-up information from a disk drive or other physical device the data is read from memory. No modification is necessary to native operating system, input/output subsystem, bootstrap code, etc., since the invention modifies characteristics, such as vectors used by the operating system, to make the disk image in memory appear to be the same as a standard external device.
  5. This disclosure deals with the management of data in the memory of a digital media playback device. Specifically this dislcosure deals with the mechanisms to allow memory to be treated as a partitioned resource, regardless of the physical implementation of the data storage in the playback device. Overlaid on this uniform memory model is a partitioned memory model that divides the memory into logical devices that are used to constrain the size of the memory used for various (logical) types of digital media.
