Technical Examples
- An air-cooled internal combustion engine includes a cylinder block having a plurality of cylinder bores disposed in parallel to each other, a cylinder head secured to an upper portion of the cylinder block, a crankshaft, two camshafts disposed in a parallel, juxtaposed relationship to each other so as to extend perpendicularly to a forward and backward direction of a vehicle on which the engine is mounted at an upper portion of said cylinder head and positioned on front and rear sides of the engine relative to each other, and a camshaft driving mechanism for transmitting rotational driving force of the crankshaft to the camshafts. A cooling space into which wind can be introduced is formed below that one of the camshafts which is positioned on the front side of the engine. The entire cylinder head is thus cooled efficiently, including portions corresponding to the cylinders disposed at intermediate positions of the engine.
- Intake camshafts 10, 14 for driving valve bodies 32 (intake valve) are positioned in right- and left-hand banks, respectively. A variable valve mechanism 30 is positioned in each of the right- and left-hand banks in such a manner as to form mirror-image symmetry. The variable valve mechanism 30 includes a control shaft 60 for controlling the operating angle of the valve body. The respective control shafts in the right- and left-hand banks are controlled in symmetrical directions. The right- and left-hand intake camshafts 10, 14 rotate in opposite directions and at a speed that is synchronized with the speed of a crankshaft.
- A poppet valve for use in an internal combustion engine. The poppet has a partially-inverted perimeter shape which nevertheless substantially maintains the curtain area of the valve. These improved valves pack more efficiently into the combustion chamber roof area than would conventional, circular-perimeter poppet valves. For the same size combustion chamber, significantly greater total curtain area is achieved, improving engine performance. Valve weight is greatly reduced, enabling the use of lighter return springs, camshafts, desmodromic actuators, and so forth.
