  1. For the production of cigarette groups (11) having a formation comprising a plurality of vertical rows of cigarettes (10) arranged one beside the other, after pushing a corresponding number of cigarettes (10) out of shafts (13) of a cigarette magazine (12), a transverse displacement of the cigarettes (10) is required in order to arrange same in a tightly packed or saddle configuration. At least marginal push rods (18) for pushing the cigarettes (10) out of the shafts (13) of the cigarette magazine (12) can be displaced transversely together with the cigarettes.
  2. A supply unit and a user unit employed in the manufacture of tobacco products, typically cigarettes and the like, are linked by a duct along which a mass of the cigarettes is advanced from the outfeed of the supply unit toward the infeed of the user unit. The advancing mass of cigarettes is parted at an intermediate zone of the duct either by rods or by a pair of frames, in such a way as to create a void that will accommodate a trolley directed into the duct from a housing by an elevator; once inside the duct, the trolley proceeds to push the mass of cigarettes from the intermediate zone toward the inlet of a hopper in such a way as to empty the duct completely, for example when changing over from one brand of cigarette to another. To advantage, the trolley is composed of two articulated structures so that its geometry and dimensions can be varied to match the variations in geometry and depth of the duct.
  3. Cut filler compositions, cigarettes, methods for making cigarettes and methods for smoking cigarettes which involve the use of partially reduced nanoparticle additives capable of acting as an oxidant for the conversion of carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide and/or as a catalyst for the conversion of carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide are provided. The compositions, articles and methods of the invention can be used to reduce the amount of carbon monoxide and/or nitric oxide present in mainstream smoke. The partially reduced additive can be formed by partially reducing Fe2O3, to produce a mixture of various reduced forms such as Fe3O4, FeO and/or Fe, along with unreduced Fe2O3.
  4. A method of producing a hinged-lid packet of cigarettes having an inner wrapping formed by folding a first blank of foil about a group of cigarettes: an outer package formed from a second blank folded about the inner wrapping to define a body and a lid hinged to each other; and a collar formed by folding a third blank and interposed between the inner wrapping and the outer package; the method including the steps of juxtaposing and connecting the third blank to the first blank in laterally offset mutual positions; forming on the first blank fold lines located as a function of the aforementioned mutual positions; and simultaneously folding the first and third blank about the group of cigarettes.
  5. A method and a system for progressive stereo matching of digital images representing a scene. In general, the present invention uses a progressive iterative technique that includes a disparity gradient limit principle and a least commitment strategy. Generally unambiguous pixel matches are found by beginning with a few reliable pixel matches and finding progressively more unambiguous pixel matches. Unambiguous pixel matches are used to define the search ranges for each pixel to guide matching in the current iteration. Unambiguous pixel matches then are found using a novel correlation technique and based on a correlation score associated with a pixel match. The search range is capable of being rotated, and is part of a novel correlation technique that provides a more robust estimate of pixel match reliability. Potential pixel matches found in the search ranges are tested for ambiguity and unambiguous matches are selected and added to the reliable pixel matches.
