Technical Examples
  1. A tape recording system is provided having an improved load/unload path, the system comprising a first pair of guides and a second pair of guides movable from an unloaded position to a loaded position. In the unloaded position, a gap between the first pair of guides and the second pair of guides provides a path for loading a tape from a supply reel to a take-up reel without contacting any of the first pair of guides, the second pair of guides and the head assembly to prevent contamination and damage of these components. The tape loader path is isolated from the head by the first pair of guides providing protection of the head from possible contact damage by the loader mechanism and tape leader.
  2. Endoscopes and other viewing devices that control the light that contacts a sample and/or that is detected emanating from a sample. The viewing devices are particularly well suited for in vivo imaging, although other uses are also included. The viewing devices, and methods related thereto, comprise a spatial light modulator in the illumination and/or detection light path so that light transmitted to the target via a bundle of light guides or optical system is transmitted substantially only into the cores of the light guide bundle and not into the cladding surrounding the light guides, filler between the light guides in the bundle, or undesired light guides. Also, methods and apparatus for mapping the pixels of the spatial light modulator to the cores of the light guides in the bundle (preferably at least 3 pixels (e.g., at least 3 mirrors for a digital micromirror device) for each core), as well as for mapping the light guides of one light guide bundle to another.
  3. A portable electronic device, e.g., a mobile communications terminal, PDA or other handheld device, includes a GPS receiver and is configured to conduct non-GPS activities. The GPS receiver is transitioned out of a sleep state to attempt to acquire at least one GPS satellite signal responsive to a selected non-GPS activity of the device. For example, the GPS receiver may be transitioned out of the sleep state to attempt to acquire at least one GPS satellite signal responsive to a first non-GPS activity, and may be left in the sleep state notwithstanding occurrence of a second non-GPS activity. The first non-GPS activity may, for example, be associated with positioning of the device in a more conducive to reception of GPS satellite signals than the second non-GPS activity. For example, the first non-GPS activity may comprise an internet browsing activity, a video presentation activity, a gaming activity and/or a non-hands-free telephony activity.
  4. The invention provides novel polypeptides having phospholipase activity, including, e.g., phospholipase A, B, C and D activity, patatin activity, lipid acyl hydrolase (LAH) activity, nucleic acids encoding them and antibodies that bind to them. Industrial methods, e.g., oil degumming, and products comprising use of these phospholipases are also provided.
  5. The invention is directed to arrangements of tape guides which can improve the guiding of data storage tape. Tape guides having specific sizes relative to the data storage tape are also disclosed. The disclosed tape guides and arrangements of tape guides can improve the ability to properly guide the data storage tape, e.g., during media fabrication, servo recording or readout, data recording or data readout. The invention is particularly useful for magnetic tape, but may also find application with optical tape, holographic tape, or other formats of data storage tape.
